Yes, to me Lillard could pull off the look of the plaits. Come on, we are in 2011 and still scandalized at a boy who likes plaits. Well maybe the point is that the whole composition of this picture was scary, he in facts looks nowhere near the great Lillard -”Goldstein/Cereal kille” of Hackers, let alone Johnny Depp, another that can pull it off. And I’m not saying only actors can, but you simply need that artistic and playful sense of taste.
I forgot to mention, another thing that molds into the stylishly daring fashion of Cereal Killer, I noticed he wears black nail polish in every other nail starting from the thumb, I saw indeed the middle finger nail is also painted in both hands, I’m not sure about the “pinky” finger though. Goldstein is legendary and definitely a “win”!

Well as I saw the Cereal Killer from Hackers, that “mind fucked” me in a good way, I thought, hey a gay boy or a gender bending fashioned boy in a 90′s movie!! I don’t know that was very sweet and cute, not that I’m sexually attracted by these boys, I like girls, sexually talking (and much more obviously), but I couldn’t help but feeling this taste of complete freedom of being and expression when I saw this legendary character, at the beginning of this year, he also painted some of his nails, so Goldstain assurged as a symbol, to me, he’s a catarsis. “behind the back a fisher vains, and the memory is already pain” as said the great Fabrizio De Andrè, how well he portrayed that sense of nostalgia. In ’95 i was 9, do the math, I would have sworn Hackers were fron 80′s!! I realized now how dated is the 95, it’s really a past era!

by stating what you typed. Come on it’s not the plaits, but how he carries off the whole ensemble, that is awful, let alone color coordinatione we must be used to the fact that there are straight boy who like plaits and/or dress flamboyant. You know Tim Burton’s Ed Wood, acted by Depp? Ed Wood was a straight crossdresser. By the way Depp has worn plaits and he could definitely pull off the look. Thing also about the positively ambiguous Matt Lillard in Hackers, playing Cereal Killer aka Emmanuel Goldstein, pity I watched just half of the movie circa January 2011. When I first saw this character I was “Wtf cool!” looked and behaved as if he had both the masculine and the feminine coexisting in a “peaceful positive fight”, genial, possibly the most mind blowing thing of that movie. Ok they mashed up in a posse of four friends both interraciality, feminism and even gender bending. I always wondered if that character was gay, as he was especially close to the hispanic hacker with a curl bobcut which I also wonder if he was gay. From Interned I stunningly finf that only the look and actitude of Cereal is questioned, never his sexuality and never pointing on his undoubtedly gender bending fashion style, incredibly, they see him as simply bizzarrely dressed guy, rather some of them saw the hispanic guy as possibly gay, for his flamboyant style, as if, i stress it, Goldstein’s style was simply plainly bizzarre, especially his braids. Due to the way the director Softley wisely played straight some tropes (a rather strange depiction of hacking i.e), dodging many stereotypes at the same time, such as that of nerds having a difficult social life and no sense of style and scrawny or fat shaped, now no, they are just awkward and over the top, especially Cereal, but rather inspiration from the fashion side.
