She must have a phobia, which one can’t “just get over” with willpower, it will only get worse every time it’s triggered. I know, I used to have one. By definition phobias are irrational, so explaining that the feared item is harmless is a waste of breath. A phobia is a vent for built-up repressed stress, so likely this kid has had a lot of other bad parenting experiences to give her this much stress. This asshole mother (funny, the verb “to mother” means to help, comfort etc) is causing terror just as real and agonizing as terror of genuinely dangerous things like axe murderers and rabid bears.
