The response by the professor is clearly a fake. If this exam brought the class average down a “whole 8 points” the MAXIMUM number of people who could have taken the final is 12, and that’s only if everyone scored nearly perfectly. Even at the smallest schools, there really aren’t any intro level classes with just 12 people.
