They do that because they want to make sure it doesn’t move more or one of the other teams players hits it then they are free to pick it up and thus making it their ball… you sir fail.
The team was attempting an on-side kick, where they try to recover the ball themselves instead of kicking it to the other team. They cannot recover the kick, however, until it has gone 10 yards. If they do, they are penalized. In avoiding the penalty, they apparently forgot that the other team was still free to pick up the ball and run with it. They would have been better off picking up the ball and being penalized than letting it sit there for an alert opponent to pick it up and score.
Usually this is done when you are losing late in a game. In this case, it was very early in the game, so it must have been run as a trick play. Either way, it didn’t work.
I noticed that, too. Usually, on-side kicks are used when you need to catch up fast and have very little time to do it in (4th quarter). Multiple Fail.
Thanks Terrance, You made my night. Now I can sleep. Don’t let the nay sayers get ya down. Tomarrow might suck for me, but I’ll just remember this. lol
My diabetic grandmother kicks better…

If only you were allowed to tackle in football.
its pretty funny how they stare at the football and thinking;
“DUDE…. what we gonna do now?” until logical sense kicks in…
