  1. So what’s the fail? Tinned goods last a lot longer than the BBE date, they’re heat treated so there’s no chance of bacterial growth. If the food is extremely acidic, and severely expired there’s a chance it may have corroded the thin layer of tin which might not make you feel to good, but genuinely, WTF is the fail?

    1. True–the date is just a best if eaten by, doesn’t mean it can’t be eaten for a few months beyond. It’s not like it;s fresh eggs or milk that have specific spoilage rates. A lot of poverty stricken people buy this to feed families that otherwise can’t afford a good variety of food stuffs.

  2. Canned and jar foods really have a much longer shelf life than what the government allows. I’ve heard of 100 year old canned meat perfectly preserved. So this is definitely not a fail. Its not the same as an expired package of lunch meat, milk, or bread.

  3. Yeah, don’t see the fail either. It’s “best before” not “turns into nuclear deadly poison on”. In Germany they actually want to change the wording just now, since pretty much all products are perfectly fine after the best before expires, but people throw them away. Other products (such as meat) specifically say so (“consume until”)

  5. The expiration dates on cans and jars on account of the potential for mishandling on the part of the consumer. An example would be a consumer who stores steel cans in a wet basement. Over time, the cans would corrode and break the airtight seal. With glass jars, the problem is storing them in a place with temperature swings. Over time, that will break the seal between the glass jar and the metal top.
