And now, for the Thousands Dollars Question: what is the “right” use of a gun?
A- Let it take the dust at the top of a cupboard, and forget about it.
B- Put it under your pillow and threaten every damn spider that dares enter your room without permission. Or the neighbour who always park his car on your space. Or your special one who did their best not to wake you up when coming back late.
C- Store it in the children playroom, to make sure those little cockroaches have fun.
D- Take it with you to school/university/the cinema, ’cause you never know, there are crazy people everywhere who intend to hurt everyone!

you do know that a lot of countries, including several European ones, allow civilians to own guns, right?
Huh, I suppose you were talking to poopr, but that made me wonder, and I looked it up. I learnt a few things, I did not think there were so many european countries with “permissive” gun politics. Would be interesting to compare the conditions to own a gun in european countries, and the figures about gun-related crime and incidents, just to see if it’s really worse in the USA. Although I have to admit, prejudiced or not, that I think it doesn’t have to be proven.
Never claimed that in European countries civilian weren’t allowed to own firearms. Yet in most countries gun control is very strict.
PS: But “gun control” does not mean that nobody’s allowed to own one, mind you.
Gren, of course the gun violence and death rates are going to be higher in the countries where the citizens are allowed to own guns and have lax gun control. In Uhmerica it is estimated (because we don’t know exactly how many) that there is 1 gun for every man, woman and child in the country. So we have about 3.5 million guns.
Here is the problem though. How do you ban something that prevalent? It would be like banning televisions or toasters. We simply don’t have the manpower or resources to enforce a ban on firearms.
And that’s where education is suppose to play its part, I guess.
When you can’t cure, you prevent the apparition of the disease, right? I suppose it’s the same for every “bad habit” societies have to face and change.
Ban it, and it will become the right they have to reconquer. Make them understand why it needs to change, and you may win.
Although I’m not sure education would suffice, given the weigh guns have in american history/culture/economy.
I think you’re right about that Gren. An enormous part of our culture is based on guns, we are in love with them here.
Education is a joke here. In my opinion education should fall on the parents. Parents should educate their children about guns and the consequences of their actions. But instead, parents buy them violent video games and let the television be the nanny. They let our fucked up pop culture infect their young impressionable brains to the point where seeing someone get their head blown off is normal. We are so desensitized it sickens me. So, education is off the table when children have to educate themselves.

I suppose to some degree, though a lot of those movies were westerns and war movies where guns were to be expected and the heroes at least had that kind of cowboy honor to them as opposed to the 80s tone of “modern day” people who were typically complete assholes, just blasting the fuck out of everyone no matter who gets in the way and never having any consequences for any of it.
