Female Shark Eats Male Shark After He Bumps Into Her at Aquarium

By EpicFail · September 4, 2026 · 1 min read

It sounds like something out of a movie, but it really happened at Seoul’s COEX Aquarium. A 2.2-meter female sand tiger shark attacked and swallowed a much smaller male banded hound shark, measuring roughly 1.2 meters, following what aquarium staff described as a territorial dispute. Staff explained that sharks establish their own territories, and an unexpected encounter can sometimes trigger an aggressive response. The larger shark reportedly bit the smaller shark around the head, and from there, her predatory instincts appeared to take over. By the following morning, nearly the entire male shark had been swallowed. Only its tail remained visibly protruding from the female shark’s mouth. While the sight was extraordinary, eating smaller sharks isn’t completely unusual for sand tiger sharks. Their typical diet includes fish, squid and crustaceans, but they are also known to prey on smaller sharks and rays. Their long, needle-like teeth are particularly effective at grabbing and holding slippery prey rather than chewing it. Despite their menacing appearance, sand tiger sharks are generally considered relatively docile around humans. They also have a fascinating way of controlling their buoyancy. They swim to the surface, gulp air and store it in their stomachs, helping them hover almost motionless in the water as they wait for prey. There is one important piece of context, though: this incident is not recent. It occurred in January 2016, although dramatic photos and videos of the shark with its prey still resurface online years later. Source: COEX Aquarium, AFP.
